Pergola, Ramada or Patio Cover?
Three words get used interchangeably for shade structures in Arizona and they are not the same thing. The distinction changes the cost, the permit path and the timeline, so it is worth settling before anyone quotes.
Pergola
A pergola is an open-roofed structure of posts and cross beams that filters sunlight rather than blocking it, giving dappled shade and an open feel.
Almost every commercial and HOA pergola we build is powder-coated aluminum or steel rather than timber. Desert UV and monsoon cycling are hard on wood, and nobody budgets to refinish a structure every few years.
Ramada
A ramada is a freestanding structure with a solid roof giving complete shade, and in Arizona it is the standard term for the shade structures at community pools, parks and picnic areas.
A ramada is a real building: engineered footings, wind load calculation, and usually a permit with stamped drawings. That is why it costs several times a pergola of the same footprint, and why its timeline is longer.
Patio Cover
A patio cover is an attached structure that ties into an existing building's roof or wall, extending usable outdoor space without needing a freestanding footprint.
On constrained sites this is often the only option, because there is not enough clear ground for proper footings. The attachment detail into the existing structure is the whole engineering problem.
Louvered Pergola
A louvered pergola has adjustable roof blades that rotate from open to closed, so one structure gives filtered light in the morning and full shade in the afternoon.
This is the premium option and the one most clients choose once they understand it, because a fixed roof is always a compromise between two seasons. Motorised louvres close on a rain sensor, which matters in monsoon.

Shade structures vary in price more than almost anything else we build, and it is rarely the material driving it.
